Glossary Term

Barrier Removal

Barrier removal refers to the removal, rearrangement, restructuring, alteration, or addition, of any element or space of a building or facility to make it usable by persons with disabilities. It can also refer to staff training, for example, where the lack of knowledge or inappropriate communication may have been the barrier. The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) requires entities to remove barriers that are readily achievable and to have a transition plan to remove additional barriers.
