Sightlines

Sightlines refer to the quality and clarity of a person’s view from a specific location within a space—such as from accessible seating in a theater or a rest bench in a gallery. In the context of accessibility, sightlines ensure that guests using designated accessible locations have an equitable visual experience compared to other seating or viewing areas. This includes unobstructed views of performance stages, screens, interpretive elements, and artworks, without visual barriers such as railings, heads, or equipment. Best practice in sightline planning considers both horizontal and vertical viewing angles, as well as the distance from focal points, to ensure comfort and inclusion for people with disabilities.
