Glossary Term

Large Print

Large print refers to materials produced with text in a larger font size to improve readability for people with low vision. The minimum font size for large print is typically 14-point, but materials are most often created in 16- to 18-point font or larger to maximize accessibility. Best practices recommend using simple, familiar fonts — either serif or sans-serif — that have clear, easily distinguishable characters. Examples of commonly recommended fonts include Arial, Calibri, Tahoma, Times New Roman, and Verdana. Fonts that are highly decorative, script-based, or condensed should be avoided, or used only minimally for emphasis. In addition to font choice and size, considerations like high color contrast, generous line spacing, and minimal crowding of text enhance readability.
