Accessible Path of Travel

An Accessible Path of Travel refers to a continuous, unobstructed route within circulation pathways that allows safe navigation for pedestrians, including sidewalks, hallways, ramps, stairways, and elevators. In spaces with a primary function—such as a gallery in a museum or a theater in a performing arts complex—an accessible path of travel must extend from site arrival points to key areas, including parking, entrances, restrooms, and multi-story navigation. This pathway includes ramps, doorways, and hallways that meet accessibility standards. Because requirements for accessible routes and circulation paths vary, the U.S. Access Board provides guidance and technical assistance on implementation.
