Accessibility Overlays are digital tools or automated software solutions added to websites or platforms claiming to detect and improve accessibility by offering features such as large text, variable contrast, magnification and font adjustments in a way that lays over the webpage, without changing the original code. Overlays often attempt to simulate screen readers or adjust visuals however without these tool capability embedded in the code, the overlay features are often inaccessible to those who require them. Additionally, overlays fail to offer other necessary access features such as alt text, captions for videos, and reader-friendly hyperlinks.
