Defining Disability

General Overview

Our definition of what disability is (and who it includes) continues to evolve over time. This understanding is always informed by the ways in which our society conceptualizes and responds to disability. While legal definitions exist, largely to ensure that people with disabilities are protected from discrimination and receive appropriate services, disability advocates and disabled activists have broadened the conversation. These advocates and activists have urged people to see disability as a natural part of human diversity, as well as a culture and identity, which shapes how different people experience the world.
