Social narratives or Social Stories™

Social narratives are learning tools developed to support individuals, particularly those on the autism spectrum, in preparing for and anticipating social situations. These narratives are often individualized and provide context, cues, and expected behaviors. They are typically narrated from the learner’s perspective, illustrating appropriate responses through examples. Social narratives can take many forms and formats, such as descriptions of physical spaces, sensory qualities, or cognitive guides, and are not necessarily focused solely on social behavior. They may also be referred to as social scripting or priming, as these terms have been in use since the 1970s.
